福!!! 2022 Designed around the idea of 五福临门 (wǔfú línmén)to emphasize one of my favorite Chinese motif of bats. Bats represent longevity and happiness, and they are used in a variety of ways to express positive connotations (and puns). On the other side of the image, the bats are swarming around an orange tree; oranges are commonly seen around lunar new year and represent happiness and wealth, and are also my father’s favorite fruit.

If you are unfamiliar with 福 character decorations: the character 福 () means “good fortune; blessings; happiness” and is hung in doorways and windows during the Lunar New Year in China. The character is hung upside down as a visual pun--倒 (dào) means “upside down; inverted” and is pronounced the same as 到 (dào) which means means “arrive.” So, inverting 福 is pronounced “fú dào” (福倒)which is the same “fú dào” (福到)meaning that 福 has arrived.

The 福 character is dripping good fortune on the household. Please tilt your head 45° to the left for the complete viewing experience.
