PUTTING CHILI CHEESE FRITOS IN MY JOOK 2020

This zine explores why food themes are so central to Asian Americans when defining their relationship with their culture; seemingly, food gives a reason to why Asian Americans are ostracized by mainstream white America, while also providing the easy narrative that food “brings people together.”
Besides being a narrow and fairly superficial way to define an identity, this of outlook doesn’t acknowledge the acceptance of Asian cuisine in American society, and completely overlooks the role Asian chefs take in gentrifying low-income neighborhoods. It simplifies the Asian American experience, history, and is unimaginative as to what Asian American can be.
