NEW ROMANTICS, 2021

From the intro page: The initial working title for this zine was Urban Sublime because I wanted to imagine the ideas of the awesome/terrible/beautiful power of nature that Romanticism revered, but in a modern context. As metropolitan spaces expand, they are becoming our more familiar landscape over the natural world. Cities are of course artificial, and human-centric, but as they form new geographies, we are still reminded of our smallness.

Ultimately, I didn’t go with this title though because I think Urban Outitters has made me feel some sort of way about the word “urban.” And, also, I didn’t want people to think that this was a Sublime fanzine (but it is a Taylor Swift reference).

This is a photo collection of alleyways, and deserted streets around the world (Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul...). I know this sounds lame, but it’s not!1 Seeing an empty space in a city with over 10 million people is its own magic. There is a sense of nostalgia for stillness, and it feels like you’re nearing a secret portal back to the natural world.

I hope you enjoy this brief series!2 Appreciate the loud moments in life, but appreciate the quieter ones more.

1This may be subjective.
2“Brief” for now--my camera roll is begging me to clear it out.
