SIBLING RIVALRY, 2023

My first woodblock print! A fun story: my mom gave me her old woodcarving tools, and I wanted to “save money,” so I thought buying wood to carve would keep me from spending extra money on a linoleum set. When I bought my sheet of wood, I found out that the tools didn’t work (they’re from the ‘80s), and refused to be sharpened/fixed/become useful in anyway. So, I borrowed tools from my teacher, did the piece, but now have an 8’x4’ sheet of wood in my friend’s basement with no tools to carve it with hahahahahaha

ANYWAY, this piece was ultimately really fun to do! I freehand drew it on the wood first, and then took a picture to play around with different components digitally before carving it out. My sister named it, and I think it’s apt. Despite the precarious situation the snake is in, the heron still doesn’t have the advantage. Which one is the younger sibling? Who’s mom’s favorite? That’s up to you!

I would like to revisit it someday (when I get woodblock tools lol) after learning about the nature of wood carving, and alter some of the design elements. I think a gradient can be achieved a different way, but I guess we’ll find out.

ALSO PLEASE SOMEBODY I need a scanner or a better way to upload these images D:
