THE EMPRESS, 2021
My friend Alijandra describes the Empress card as the song “I’m Every Woman” because the Empress “truly embodies femininity.” She centers creativity, and sensuality, and (as Alijandra puts it) is the “baddie” of the Tarot gang. Alijandra beats out Wikipedia as my main interpreter of Tarot cards, which is an important role to hold.
This drawing of the Empress shows her pouring a flowing gourd into the water. Behind her, the river bed is drying and cracked, but she revitalizes the environment around her, and life sprouts on the mountains. I dressed her as a cosmopolitan from 1930s Shanghai. Her qipao/cheongsam emphasizes her grace, endurance, and sensuality.
Scroll through to see the original original sketch I had made for this drawing (circa 2014?).
