THE TOWER, (2023)
I have been telling people that I’m in my “Tower Phase.” The Tower card represents the destruction of established things (lifestyles, objects, relationships, jobs, etc.) before rebuilding. To me, this is an opportunity to start anew: nothing is permanent, and the card reminds us that renewal is possible. I have been telling my elementary art students that we have erasers for a reason, and we shouldn’t be afraid or ashamed of trying again (they don’t listen to me, and insist on drawing in black marker first).

When I first moved to the southwest, I was introduced to the saying that if a coyote crosses your path to return home, or reroute your journey. I love this adage: coyotes to me are very playful, but shouldn’t be taken lightly--they are predators and opportunistic feeders.

Behind the coyote is a crumbled tower based off of a watch tower along the Wall of China. How the coyote relates to a symbol of Imperial China is up for interpretation.
